Strategic Element (SOR) is set to conduct a feasibility and scoping study with the Defence Science and Technology Group (DST Group).
The DST Group is part of the Australian Department of Defence, providing science and technology support to safeguard Australia and its national interests.
The feasibility and scoping study will focus on the autonomous sensing and search of chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear sources.
Through the study, SOR’s subsidiary company, Stealth Technologies, will integrate DST Group’s search algorithms into its autonomous unmanned ground vehicle (UAV) and unmanned airborne vehicle (UAG) hardware and software platforms, as well as develop an initial software exemplar.
The proposal of the feasibility and scoping study is to integrate DST-developed search algorithms for locating chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear sources within a geographic area into a Stealth Technologies UAV drone that is autonomously launched and landed by a UGV.
The autonomous UGV would allow drones and sensors into the target environment, while keeping humans safe at a distance.
The feasibility and scoping study plus software exemplar is set to cost around $50,000, which will be funded by the DST Group to Stealth Technologies. The study is expected to be completed by the end of June 2021.
In addition to the study, Stealth Technologies has developed custom robotics, built of top of its autonomous mobile platform to develop the first automated perimeter security solution of its kind.
The company worked with Honeywell and the Western Australian Department of Justice to deploy an autonomous security vehicle (ASV) at the Eastern Kalgoorlie Regional Prison. The ASV is being deployed to increase security around the perimeter of the prison and reduce the amount of human involvement in testing and patrols, giving staff more time for more skilled tasks.
The company says the global perimeter security market is forecast to grow to U.S.$282.26 billion (around A$365 billion) by 2025.
