Viking Mines (VKA) has begun an aircore drilling program at the First Hit Project in Western Australia.

The 28-square-kilometre First Hit Project lies 50 kilometres west of Menzies and consists of six active mining and prospecting licences and one exploration licence.

Viking has planned around 350 holes with the main aim of drilling through the cover to collect fresh rock samples.

This drilling program will also aim to confirm structures and develop a geology map, identify new gold anomalies and test geochemical anomalies.

The first hole was drilled on March 11 and the program is roughly 25 per cent complete at this given time.

“I am very pleased that we have successfully commenced with our regional aircore program on time and as planned,” CEO Julian Woodcock commented.

“The program objective is to complete a first pass evaluation of the poorly tested First Hit Project tenements and has been designed using a regional geological re-interpretation of the geophysics and regolith,” he said.

“We will be drill testing conceptual targets and gold anomalies from historic soil and auger sampling and looking to define drill targets for follow up bedrock testing,” he added.

On March 15, 635 metres of the planned 2508 metre diamond drilling program had been completed at First Hit.

Two of the holes have been drilled while a third is in progress and is nearing target depth.

The core is expected to be shipped to Kalgoorlie by March 22 to be cut and sampled before being sent for analysis.

Viking will now continue to advance both the RC and diamond drilling programs and will carry on making updates as work progresses.

Shares in Viking are up 7.89 per cent and are trading at 4.1 cents at 1:22 pm AEDT.
